World leaders, world religions, royalty, family and even strangers ventilate their opinion these days. A bit annoying sometimes. Middle East Islam summoned to be more tolerant in return for the 5 billion cash they received in aid. The Queen of the Netherlands advised the natives to be tolerant towards immigrant’s & descendants while the latter should abide the law and ways of the land. Technically I'm a ‘non western immigrant’, so tolerance is not expected as I’m still in a phase of adaption from ignorance. A Jewish girl gets pregnant without intercourse. Her poor husband believes her and accepts the child as his own. Is this tolerance as expected or the epitome of love - treason? Guantanamo Bay, a shame according to the in-laws. Would they prefer a non mandatory 200 hours civil service to Dutch law, punishment according to the Sharia or returning these lost sheep to their home countries? There will be more opinions the coming days, survive and a good 2008.

De wereldleiders, de wereld religiën, Koninklijke Hoogheden, familie en zelf totaal onbekenden geven deze dagen ongevraagd hun belerende mening. Af en toe wat vervelend. Het midden oosten wenst meer tolerantie voor de 5 miljard aan hulp die ze gaat ontvangen. De koningin wil dat autochtonen toleranter zijn jegens allochtonen en de laatste moeten zich aan de Nederlandse wet en wijze houden. Technisch ben ik een ‘niet westerse allochtoon’, dus niet gehouden aan teveel tolerantie want ergens nog reizend in de evolutie vanuit achterlijke immigrant. Een Joods meisje raakt zwanger zonder sex. Haar echtgenoot gelooft haar en accepteert het kind. Is dit de gevraagde tolerantie of een hoogtepunt in liefde - verraad? Guantánamo Bay is schandalig volgens de aangetrouwden. Was een taakstraf van 200 uur volgens Nederlandse maatstaven, een straf volgens de Sharia of het terugsturen van de verloren schaapjes naar land van herkomst beter gepast? De komende dagen brengen meer meningsuitingen, sterkte en een goed 2008.

Paperwork – Papier hier

The newspaper boy did not comply. He was fired by the distribution manager and had his pay withheld. In revenge he started to dump all the leaflets of the distributor he could get in the park. This is the third week in a row that the distributor had to collect the mess after my phonecall. I advised him to inform the police otherwise I would.
But a new project is on its way. Selling my old kitchen on the internet, I discovered two water bike ‘propeller drives’ in a clearance sale. My original idea was to built a jet propelled water bike, with a horizontal centrifugal pump, thus giving access to shallow waters. But the two propeller drives were such a bargain that I changed my plans for the moment. A short internet search led me to http://www.aquacyclette.com. The original company was liquidated, but Ruud wanted to revive the concept. The propulsion is still a sound affair, developed by Eindhoven Technical University 27 year ago. Ruud needed a contemporary design for his seabike and asked me to draw some ideas in return for spare parts or whatever I might need for my project. When I finally mailed some sketches we were in prototype stage. A straight and simple frame of three (divided) aluminum bars and one tube, firmly attached at six points to the floats. The new seabike would weigh around 20 kg and would fit a 40 cm diameter - 120 cm long kit bag. Ruud’s business partners agreed to built three prototypes for a fair in April; two regulars and one hand driven bike for a handicapped person.


De krantenjongen was niet zo enthousiast over het verlies van zijn baantje en de bijbehorende inkomstenderving. Als wraak gooit hij elke week een verzameling folders van de distributeur onder de struiken in het park. Dit werd de derde week en ik waarschuwde de distributeur met de milieu politie.
Maar er zijn nieuwe sterren aan het firmament. Toen ik mijn oude keuken op het internet verkocht ontdekte ik twee waterfiets aandrijvingen. Mijn oorspronkelijke idee, een waterdruk aandrijving via een horizontale centrifugaalpomp liet ik vooreerst varen toen ik de prijs hoorde. Een korte speurtocht leidde me naar http://www.aquacyclette.com. Het oorspronkelijke bedrijf was ter ziele, maar Ruud wilde seabikes doen herleven. De fiets- schroef- aandrijving was goed uitgewerkt door de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven en kon nog een tijdje mee. Ruud had wel een modern jasje nodig voor het 27 jaar oude concept en hij vroeg me wat ideeën op papier te zetten in ruil voor onderdelen of wat ik nodig dacht te hebben voor mij project. Mijn eerste schetsen bereikten gelijk de prototype fase. Een simpel raamwerk van drie (gedeelde) aluminium profielen en een buis, goed vastgezet op zes punten van de drijvers. De nieuwe seabikes wegen 20 kg en passen in een plunjezak van 40 cm doorsnede bij 120 cm lengte. Ruud’s zakenrelaties gingen akkoord en zullen drie prototypes bouwen voor een beurs in april: twee gewone en één hand bewogen waterfiets voor een gehandicapte.

Newspaper American style, Bezorgde bezorging

We all watch American movies; imagine a newspaper boy cycling fast on the sidewalk and throwing newspapers in front gardens;a wide quiet avenue with trees, large houses and green lawns. It is part of the visual American dream for many outside the US. People from Singapore can imagine the fine they WOULD get for littering. In the Netherlands people could think of the comfortable delivery in their front door letterbox. Ages ago, when I delivered, there was one newspaper and an occasional leaflet. Workload of delivery boys changed in time as well as their attitude. Nowadays I receive up to 100 promotion leaflets, 5 free regional papers and several free newspapers each week in addition to paid subscriptions. I scan the data for bargains and interesting events but it is a huge amount, for some delivery boys as well; every other month they drop bundles in the scrubs or ditch of the neighboring park. Filing a complaint with distributors, environmental police or shopping chains personnel is frustrating; 9 to 5 servants, what do they care. So I changed policy; first I inform the small local businesses of my storage problem with their expensive leaflets. Second, I phone the distributor who after an AHSOYOU promises to sent an collector and apologizes.

We kennen ze, de Amerikaanse films waarin een jongen over het trottoir fiets en kranten in een voortuin gooit; brede stille lanen, grote huizen en groene gazons. Buiten de VS een beeld van de Amerikaanse droom. Hoewel; in Singapore zal men bij het zien aan een boete denken en in Nederland aan de comfortabele deur aan deur bezorging. Generaties geleden, toen ik de krant rondbracht, was er één krant en af en toe een folder. Dit is heel lang geleden, tegenwoordig ontvang ik tot 100 folders, 5 regionale bladen en diverse gratis kranten naast de geabonneerde kranten en tijdschriften. Ik doorblader de enorme stapel op aanbiedingen en evenementen maar ook bezorgers wordt het soms teveel. Om de maand gooit er wel een bezorger pakketten in de struiken of sloot van het naastliggende park. Een klacht indienen is frustrerend; tenslotte is de verspreider, de milieu agent en het winkelketen hoofd een 08:00 – 17:00 werknemer die het niet zo interesseert. Nu bel ik eerst kleine bedrijven die ik mijn garagegrootte uitleg in relatie tot hun foldermateriaal. Als tweede bel ik de distributeur die na een OHDUSJIJ beloofd om de rommel op te halen en excuses aanbied.

What is in a price? – De prijs bepaald!

Crumbling down of our eighteen year old kitchen got us into planning a new.
1 Ikea; A friendly lady explains some impracticalities of my plans, together we make a new drawing. A well spent afternoon in the design studio, budget €7,500.
2 Discounters; One actually used my drawing with modifications, ‘ we don’t do this & that, dummy spaces are added’. He prepares a bill €10,000 and requests my signature. Other discounters do not respond or request an order.
3 Shops for electric appliances and built-in; ‘Harense Smid’ makes an effort to explain their products, prices, quality and recommends to visit their kitchen department. At ‘Altis’, the salesman takes his time to show us the better-kitchen-world and helps us composing. The price is €23,000 - way over our budget but no worries, he is willing to meet our €15,000 budget.
4 Family; ‘Bert van Leeuwen Interieurs’, one man company & contributor of the cooking isle, overbids; custom building, no dummy spaces, retractable carving board above the dishwasher and a lighting cove, after bargaining €15,500.
Schedule, demolition and selling. Old Ikea parts are sold within five minutes at ‘marktplaats.nl’. The dishwasher takes a week. The tiled workbench survives a three meter crash in the debris container. Refrigerator and microwave are reserved until the new kitchen is ready. New connections for electrical, cooking gas, hot and cold water and a thin radiator. As we complete the job, Bert’s backache stalls the project with at least two weeks. I continue with painting the walls & ceilings of the first floor and the staircase up to the attic.
5 Heating shops; the new radiator is bought for convenient low connection points in middle, but the tubing rising from the floor has a rare coupling. ‘Handelsonderneming Arnhem’ advises me to visit ‘Siem Gitsels’. Siem Gitsels inspects the coupling and substitutes my obsolete ‘Pex 14’ for new ones. Hot showers and functioning heating for €27. ‘Handelsonderneming Arnhem’ is astonished when I return, because a simplified ‘Plex 14’ is priced here at €2.65.

Onze achttien jaar oude keuken vertoonde steeds meer kuren met de inbouwapparatuur, tijd om naar een nieuwe keuken om te kijken.
1 Ikea: Een aardige dame legt me de onpraktische kanten uit van mijn plannen en samen komen we tot een ontwerp à €7.500. Een middag, wel besteed in de ontwerp studio.
2 Discounters: Een gebruikt mijn ontwerp met restricties, ‘we kunnen dit & dat niet, we gebruiken loze ruimten’ en maakt de rekening op à €10.000. Andere discounters reageren niet of willen dat ik een order.
3 Electrozaken: ‘Harense Smid’ informeert over prijs, kwaliteit, inbouw en raadt aan om de keukenpoot te bezoeken. Bij Altis neemt de verkoper de tijd om samen een ideale keuken samen te stellen. De prijs € 23.000 is behoorlijk boven het budget, maar geen nood, voor € 15.000 kan dezelfde keuken ook geleverd worden.
4 Familie: Bert van Leeuwen Interieurs, een eenmansbedrijf & bedenker van het keukeneiland, biedt de keuken op maat aan; zonder loze ruimten, met intrekbare snijplank boven de vaatwasser en een verlichtingsbalk, na wat handelen voor €15.500.
Plannen, slopen en verkopen. De oude Ikea delen worden binnen 5 minuten op marktplaats.nl verkocht. De vaatwasser wordt na een week afgehaald. Het aanrechtblad van tegeltjes was overleefd de val van drie meter in de puincontainer. De ijskast en magnetron zijn gereserveerd tot de nieuwe keuken klaar is. Aansluitingen verplaatsen voor elektra, gas, warm en koud water en een smalle radiator. Als we klaar zijn belt Bert, wegens rugpijn moet het project minimaal twee weken worden uitgesteld.
5 Sanitairwinkel: de nieuwe radiator wordt gekocht om de handige aansluitingen aan de onderzijde - in het midden. De koppeling die uit de vloer komt is onbekend. Handelsonderneming Arnhem adviseert om Siem Gitsels te proberen. Siem Gitsels bekijkt de koppeling en vervangt de verouderde ‘Pex 14’. €27 voor een warme douche en werkende verwarming. Handelsonderneming Arnhem is verbaasd als ik terug kom want voor een verbeterde ‘Plex 14’ wordt hier €2,65 gerekend.

Dreaming - Dromen

The kitchen project is fast approaching, most material should be ready and in, the stone workbenches are confirmed (www.4eggsco.nl > about us > design). Friends offered their help with work and dinners. The prospect of a luxury kitchen, the preparations and a daily news bombardment are the origins of a dream. The lowlands had to be evacuated because of climate change and it was decided to move the houses with giant rolling-lifters. All of Europe had to move eastwards to higher grounds. I woke up with my house in a German garden. A large tree with white doves and white peacocks stood very close to the house. Big white hens occupied the aviary - like - garden. I opened the bedroom window and a hungry peacock peaks in. A governmental spokeswoman behind me informs about the new location and a resettling stop due to a coming ice age and lost claims for property value losses. Fuck yeah! snow and ice in winter, top pavement for skating in summer, forest, space, property money back, working trains and cheap airfare…
My breakfast this morning is in style with a liter coffee sorbet; a third liter of milk, 3 spoons ice coffee powder, a shot almond liquor, some drops of walnut oil and 35 minutes ice-machining. Good morning.
Furniture outside for the revamp - Meubels buiten voor de verbouwing

Project keuken nadert snel, het meeste materiaal zou al binnen zijn en het stenen aanrechtblad is bevestigd (www.4eggsco.nl > about us > design). Vrienden boden hulp bij de werkzaamheden en met warm eten. Het vooruitzicht op een nieuwe keuken, de voorbereiding en een dagelijkse nieuwsoffensief vertaalden zich in een droom. Wegens de klimaatverandering zouden enorme heftransporteurs woningen naar hoger gelegen gebieden bengen. Heel Europa zou een stapje oostwaarts maken. Toen ik wakker werd stond mijn huis in een tuin in Duitsland. Een grote boom met witte duiven en witte pauwen stond vlak bij het huis. Grote witte kippen liepen in de volière -achtige tuin. Ik opende het slaapkamerraam en een hongerige pauw steekt zijn kop naar binnen. Achter mij vertelt een regeringvertegenwoordigster over de nieuwe locatie en dat de evacuatie gestopt wordt wegens een opkomende ijstijd en verloren claims in verband met waardevermindering van de woningen. Bliksems hoera! sneeuw en ijs in de winter, perfect skate asfalt in de zomer, bossen, ruimte, geld terug voor het huis, rijdende treinen en goedkope vliegtickets…
Een waardig ontbijt met een liter koffiesorbet: een derde liter melk, 3 lepels ijskoffie poeder, een scheutje amandellikeur, een paar druppels walnotenolie en 35 minuten bereiding in de ijsmachine. Goede morgen.

Man versus Nature - Mens en Natuur

Man and nature are in an endless battle over supremacy ever since creation.
As supermarket shopping does not represent the fight for existence, media proofs my point with hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, forest fires, climate change etc.
From my immediate vicinity I can report some humble struggles myself:
- Lengthy, loud moaning of the hens when laying, ending in infinite proud cackle.
- One chicken decided to lay her eggs from the roost, thus forcing omelet’s.
- The pergola growing into the study at the second floor.
- Keeping my weight.
Though no global dangers, these examples are nonetheless probing and hard to countermeasure. Fortunately man has abilities, that nature cannot match; we can shop, play music and turn nature into food.
So I bought an ice machine! Easy enjoyment, fill it up, push the button and wait 30 minutes. Any mix of fruit pulp (pears, plums, red currants, grapes - garden) yoghurt, ginger syrup, coconut grating, chocolate chips, grape juice, honey and hazelnuts grating turns into 0,75 liters of sorbet.

Mens en natuur zijn sinds hun ontstaan in een eeuwigdurend gevecht verwikkeld. De boodschappenkar in de supermarkt volgooien betekent niet dat de strijd om het bestaan gestreden is. Het journaal brengt elke dag het bewijs met orkanen, tsunamies, overstromingen, bosbranden, klimaatveranderingen enz. Vanuit mijn omgeving kan ik van een dergelijke strijd berichten:
- Langdurig, door merg en been dringend gesteun van eieren leggende kippen, overgaand in een eindeloos gekakel van opluchting.
- Een kip die vanaf de roest (kippenstok) besloot te gaan leggen en aldus omeletten afdwingt.
- De pergola die de studeerkamer op de tweede verdieping binnen groeit.
- Op gewicht blijven.
Hoewel deze strijd geen direct levensbedreigende elementen bezit, slaat ze toch diepe wonden en is weerwoord moeilijk. Gelukkig kan de mens iets dat de natuur niet kan: kopen, muziek aanzetten en de natuur omzetten in eten.
Om het kort te houden, ik kocht een ijsmachine! Heerlijk gemak, opvullen, knop indrukken en 30 minuten wachten. Elk mengsel van fruitmoes (peren, pruimen, rode bessen, druiven - uit de tuin) yoghurt, gemberstroop, kokosnoot schaafsel, chocolade schaafsel, druivensap, honing en hazelnotenrasp veranderd in 0,75 liter sorbet.

Autumn - Herfst

Autumn announced itself with flying geese crossing the suburb in the morning and early evening. The cackling hens claim more attention but the geese’s distant chatter is noticeable. Later in autumn their chatter will drown out the sounds of frogs, Eurasian jay, thrushes and wood pigeons.
Dewed cobwebs sparkle in the morning among an abundance of hazelnuts, grapes, damson plums and cooking pears. Harvest was already good for potatoes - one huge pan, plums - 4 liters boiled down and redcurrants - 3 liters boiled down. Medlars are smaller and fewer, which is not a bad thing since they are very rich in calories and would need explaining to the dietician.
A fir-tree came down over the ditch into the damson plum and I had to saw it up. After three days of pruning the ditch banks were getting enough light again for two rhododendrons I got as a present. Yep, we had a double birthday party; another fine gift is an electronic frog which croaks at any observed moving object on the gardenwalk.
‘Senior Sport’ offered me, as volunteer with 81 others, a boat trip over the Rhine to Emmerich. I bought a cool ‘Surfing Scooter’ after half an hour of chatting with a nice lady who explained me the technique and offered a considerable discount after the sale.

Herfst
De herfst kondigt zichzelf aan met overvliegende ganzen in de ochtend en avond. Kakelende kippen overstemmen het nog zachte ganzengekwebbel in de verte. Later in de herfst zal het gekwebbel kikkers, Vlaamse gaai, lijsters en houtduiven overstemmen.
Bedauwde spinnenwebben glinsteren 's ochtends tussen een overvloed aan hazelnoten, druiven, mirabellen (kroosjespruimen) en stoofperen. De oogst was al groot voor aardappelen – een grote pan, pruimen – 4 liters ingekookt moes en rode bessen – 3 liters ingekookt sap. Mispels zijn kleiner en minder aanwezig, maar dat is eigenlijk niet erg want ze zijn erg calorierijk en de diëtiste zou er minstens één opmerking over maken.
Een dennenboom viel over de sloot in de mirabellenboom en ik moest hem omzagen. Na drie dagen snoeien was er eindelijk weer genoeg licht bij de slootkant voor twee gekregen rododendrons. Ja, we vierden een dubbele verjaardag en één van de cadeautjes was een elektronische kikker die kwaakt als iemand over het tuinpad loopt. Senioren Sport gaf als dank voor het vrijwilligersschap van mij en 81 anderen een bootreis over de Rijn naar Emmerich. Ik kocht een vet gave ‘Wip Step’ na een half uur kwebbelen met een aardige dame, die me de techniek uitlegde en uiteindelijk een fikse korting gaf na de aankoop.

Life after vacation - Leven na vakantie

Vacation is a memory away and routine gets its grip on daily life. It took me some months to get used to added medication which basically suppresses more heart rate and should fight gout. My heart rate below 100 Hz is irregular, so weeks of lighter exercise had to precede any running. ‘Meinertswijk’, after weeks of rain was at last roasting in the sun, opportunity to diminish my canoe list. Meinertswijk is a protected river bend with several small lakes. The south lake is by far the largest with many small islands. It was a splendid day with kingfishers, herons, cormorants, big jumping carps, wild flowers and many other birds. It took about 2 hours to paddle the banks, including a short drag with the canoe to the neighboring lake and a peek at thistle flower covered Galloways (wild cows). The history of this tiny nature reservation in the city is even more worth mentioning; 847, Vikings looted and destroyed the stronghold of the Saxon Meginhardeswich; 10 BCE, Germanicus has his Romans legions built fortress Castra Herculis as starting point for military campaigns in Germany. Castra herculis may owe its name to Magusanus, the Batavian supreme god, who had a large shrine (visible from Castra Herculis) at nearby Elst, and was often identified with the Roman Hercules. Drusus branched of the Rhine with a canal to the river IJssel and into northern German territory; 1628- 1853, Castle of Arnhem; 1940, German bunkers; 1951 - 1963, IJssel - military floodwater defense, a dam with sliding doors to protect the western part of the Netherlands against attacks in the cold war. (not all historical data is 100% certified).

It's not only history that looks upon me - Niet alleen geschiedenis kijkt toe.

De vakantie bestaat weer uit herinneringen en de dagelijkse routine krijgt steeds meer grip op mijn leven. Het kostte mij enkele maanden om te wennen aan nieuwe aangepaste medicatie die mijn hartslag meer moet onderdrukken en jicht moet bestrijden. Onder 100 Hz is mijn hartslag erg onregelmatig zodat ik een aanloop naar het hardlopen moest inbouwen. Het zuidelijke meertje van Meinertswijk lag na weken van regen eindelijk te bakken in de zon, de kans om het van mijn kano-lijst te schrappen. Meinertswijk is een beschermde rivierbocht en ligt midden in de stad. De zuidelijke plas, met diverse eilandjes is het grootst en kostte me ongeveer 2 uur peddelen inclusief een bezoek aan de volgende plas en het verslepen van de kano, om de wilde Galloway runderen bedekt met distelbloemen te zien. Al met al een prachtige dag met ijsvogels, reigers, aalscholvers, grote opspringende karpers, wilde bloemen en een scala aan vogels. De geschiedenis van Meinertswijk is nog noemenswaardiger: 847, Vikingen plunderen en verwoesten de versterking, gesticht door de Saks Meginhardwic in 814; 10 BCE, Germanicus laat zijn Romeinse legioenen het castellum Castra Herculis bouwen als ondersteuning voor zijn militaire campagnes naar Duitsland. De naam Herculis komt waarschijnlijk van Magusanus, het Bataafse equivalent van Herculis wiens tempel in Elst te zien was vanuit het fort. Drusus liet een doorsteek graven van de Rijn naar de IJssel om de noordelijke expansie van het Romeinse Rijk te vergemakkelijken; 1628 - 1853, de Heerlijkheid - kasteel van Arnhem; 1940, Duitse bunkers; 1951 - 1963 de IJsselinie - een dam met schuiven waarmee een groot gebied onder water gezet kon worden om een aanval van het Oostblok te stoppen. Red, White & Blue

The US is huge, busy, dynamic, fast, but gradually adding weight; more people, more cars, more energy craving. There is abundance, so nobody seems to care and life stays in the fast lane. Gas prices are exploding, schools loose in quality, government measures are a show-off; familiar complaints in the Netherlands as well. But we have more in common, e.g. the colors of the flag; (indio-)red, (cumskin-)white and (darkie-)blue. The Dutch Red-White–Blue was originally (royal)orange and provincial-neutral white-blue. Generalizing the US colors: Indios are family oriented and don’t expect service if you don’t speak Spanish; darkies have a weary attitude but sometimes dress in great style and cumskins have little time. This division is for lower income, money increases status and decreases color difference.
When I took my mother for her grocery shopping in Ede, I was amazed by the many veils of the Moroccan Dutch. They left backward Morocco of their grandfather for a better opportunity and recreate the old atmosphere for their kids. Meanwhile a modern Morocco moves ahead into the future. Ede is part of a dispersing bible belt, so black clothes are leaving and black veils are coming. Strict religion is back with a present day attitude; yelling for mosques, special schools, equality and disapproving the remnant of Dutch values. The Spanish speaking US immigrants are a lot more fun! The Afro-Americans are comparable with Dutch from the former colonies Suriname and Indonesia. It might take 50 years of annoyance for the lower income natives from Ede who can’t escape.


Rood, Wit & Blauw
Het duurde een vakantie in Californië en New York, maar hier is een nieuwe blog. Vakantiefoto’s staan op http://majong.mijnalbums.nl/ en de 100 beste op >publications>photos. De VS is enorm groot, enorm druk, dynamisch en snel, maar verzand langzamerhand in meer mensen, auto's en energiehonger. Er is overvloed en dus gaat het leven ongestoord door. Benzineprijzen schieten omhoog, de schoolkwaliteit degradeert, regeringspolitiek is gebral; het geweeklaag lijkt Nederlands. We hebben echter meer gemeen zoals de kleuren van de vlag; rood (voor Spaans sprekenden), wit (voor blanken) en blauw (voor zwarten). De Nederlandse vlag was oorspronkelijk (koninklijk) oranje en provincieneutraal blanje-bleu. De kleuren van de VS generaliserend: Spaans sprekenden zijn familie gericht en verwacht geen service als jij geen Spaans spreekt; zwarten doen nadrukkelijk verveeld hun werk maar kleden zich soms verbluffend stijlvol en de blanken hebben geen tijd. Deze scheiding geldt voor de lagere inkomens, met materie vervaagt de raskleur.
Toen ik mijn moeder meenam voor haar boodschappen in Ede was ik verbaasd over de vele hoofddoeken. Immigranten die een achterlijk Marokko van opa verlieten voor betere kansen, creëren deze atmosfeer nu voor hun kinderen. Intussen gaat een modern Marokko wel vol voorruit de toekomst tegemoet. Ede ziet de zwarte kousen gaan en de zwarte hoofddoeken komen. Onbuigzame religie gaat nu gepaard met hedendaags geschreeuw om moskeen, speciale onderwijs, gelijkheid en afkeuring van het laatste restje Nederlandse waarden. De Spaans sprekende immigratie in de VS voelt veel prettiger aan. De Afro-Amerikanen hebben een vergelijkbare plek als de Surinamers en Indonesiërs uit de ex koloniën. De minder welgestelde Edenaar, die niet verhuist moet de komende 50 jaar wegzien.

Trikke from Belgium - uit België

Trikke (pronounced trike) from Belgium,
Compact travelling without the hassle of inline skates protection was on my wish list. Option folding bikes: not a real challenge, not much fun but reasonable compact to take along in train - plane - automobile. There were some ingenious foldable bikes but my interest was caught by a Trikke on clearance sale. Inexpensive, fun, fitness and foldable. The Trikke 8 was a bargain but came with polyurethane wheels. There were better machines like the T8 convertible with air tires. Trikke Netherlands offered me the optional air tires for free and informed me that flagship T12 Roadster, with bigger wheels, was not available and not recommended. Enough sales pitch to get me looking for the T12. Dutch ‘marktplaats.nl - p2p’ had one in Belgium; my bid was accepted and I was on my way to Turnhout - Belgium. The T12 was bought on a business trip in the USA, made street legal and was driven in the Netherlands. It was on sale because of a new job; Belgian cobbles do not offer much comfort and tracks are narrow. Not a good reason, for me Dutch biking tracks are not that good; used by normal road hogs and traffic like cargo haulers, trucks, farmer equipment while curves mean speeding motorbikes adding more danger. Only Germanys’ space offers clean, good paved roads that are really fun. A new challenge, life should not be too easy.



Trikke (spreek uit ‘traik’) uit België,
Op mijn verlanglijstje stond een compact vervoersmiddel zonder de bescherming poespas die bij inline skates nodig is. Optie vouwfiets: niet echt een uitdaging, niet echt leuk, wel handig op reis per trein, vliegtuig of met de auto. Er zijn vernuftige vouwfietsen maar een opruiming van een Trikke trok mijn aandacht. De Trikke 8 was spotgoedkoop maar had polyurethaan wielen. Er zijn intussen veel betere Trikkes als de T8 convertible met luchtbanden. Trikke Nederland bood gratis luchtbanden als ik een nieuwe T8 kocht en vertelden dat de T12 Roadster - vlaggenschip met grotere luchtbanden niet leverbaar was en ook niet werd aangeraden. Beetje veel verkooppraat, dus ik ging op zoek en vond een T12 op ‘marktplaats.nl’ in Turnhout.
Mijn bod werd geaccepteerd en ik was op weg naar België. De T12 was op een zakenreis in de VS gekocht, aangepast aan het wegverkeer en even in Nederland gebruikt. Na een nieuwe baan bleken de Belgische kasseien wel erg krap bemeten. Voor mij was dit geen reden; de buitenwegen worden naast normale wegpiraten gebruikt ook door vrachtauto’s, bouwverkeer, tractoren en als er bochten zijn, door snelle en gevaarlijke motorfietsen misbruikt. Allen op Duitse paden is het schoon, ruim en prettig recreëren. Een nieuwe uitdaging, het leven moet niet simpel worden.

Hanging out bench - Hangplek bank

Hanging out bench
A mom from the neighborhood asked permission to place an old bench in front of our house, under the medlar tree.
The bench is to be a hangout point for her daughter and friends. Unofficially this point already serves such a purpose. The tortured medlar tree has been a climbing practice tool for several generations of kids. Pebbles and stones underneath are used to built and shove around. Parents forbid climbing the tree and request me to sent their kids away. My answer; what’s the problem, they still have original milk teeth?
Youngest kids lay and play in the grass and warn me when a outsider plays on THEIR grass.
There is not much free and clean grass around as most families tend a ‘kärcher’ garden. Maintenance friendly, paved and fenced small Dutch gardens thus allow for furniture, decoration, some potted plants and a bbq.
Most kids wonder about the function of the garden, it has a climbing tree, chickens (is this a zoo?), a ditch with frogs / dragon flies / salamanders and many birds nests, an overgrown pergola instead of a sunblind. It’s an green and wild abnormality. Older boys will eventually start using the driveway to the garage for soccer practice (if they think I’m not around).

Hangplekbank
Onlangs vroeg een moeder of ze en oud bankje voor het huis onder de mispelboom mocht plaatsen. Het bankje was bedoeld voor haar dochter en vriendinnetjes. Onofficieel dient dit punt al een paar generaties kinderen als hangplek.
De mispel wordt gebruikt als klim en speelboom, de losse stenen eronder om te bouwen en te verslepen. Ouders vragen me de kinderen weg te sturen, maar ik zeg dan dat ze nog melktandjes hebben en het dus geen kwaad kan.
De kleinste kinderen liggen en spelen in het gras en vragen mij om ‘vreemde’ kinderen van HUN gras weg te sturen. Er is weinig gras in de ‘kärcher’ tuintjes van de andere huizen aan het hof. Onderhoudsvriendelijk, geplaveid en omheind met ‘gamma’ houtwerk biedt de tuin wel ruimte voor trendy meubilair, decoraties, een bbq en wat potplanten.
Veel kinderen vragen zich soms hardop af wat de functie van de tuin is; een klimboom, kippen (is dit een kinderboerderij?), een sloot met kikkers / salamanders / libellen en veel vogelnestjes, een begroeide pergola in plaats van zonnescherm.
Het is in ieder geval ongebruikelijk, zo veel wild groen. Oudere jongens zien in de oprit naar de garage een prachtige voetbalplek (als ze denken dat ik niet thuis ben).

Ethics of Aristotle is more logic and makes more sense than religious groups advocating for their purposes. The Greek mythology of the beginning of live beats the Bible + Koran by a mere twenty thousand fold. Muslims branched away from Christianity to conquer all earth by sword and not with words. The epitamy of hypocrisy is a horrendous attitude against an enormous existing prostitution and homosexuality in Islamic countries. Religious frenzy alone is inadequate to attain human well being. It’s a bit like Microsoft, Macintosh and Linux as open source.

Buying the vidcam took me two days.

When I saw the camera I was shopping for a new watercooker.

The price for an all digital vidcam was extremely sharp so I checked the internet.

The vidcam is an older model and 3 years ago, it used very expensive cf-cards. Meanwhile cf and sd dropped a tenfold in price, adding speed + buffering, while the technicalities of the vidcam were very much the same as the newer JVC models.

Add two new Li-Ion battery packs with a net/car- loader as extra and the bargain is complete. I suspect the Chinese batteries from Friesland may explode during charging and extra charger might be convenient on trips.

Celebration

We celebrated being 12.5 years together, in Thai Restaurant Rung - Arnhem Center.
It was a delicious meal and everybody was happy. My running schedule has to be postponed for some days because of these celebration dinners. The home kitchen oven broke down due to old age and the watercooker broke down due to internal leakage. A new kitchen is in design, so the final revamp of http://www.4eggsco.nl is momentarily on hold.

The best things in live are free...
Free gifts this week, a free book (Geert Mak - The Bridge; book promotion week) which served as a free train ticket Sunday. A walk in Scheveningen, a fish dinner in the harbor and coffee in a beach club. The beach clubs were warned for extreme high water and heavy winds but the train ride back was smooth and enjoyable while reading. Phoned for an AGP8x Ati Radeon 128 Mb, an advertisement which turned out to be a free pick up. So I hopped on the bicycle for a tour along the Rhine, crossing the Rhine with the solar powered ferry for Doorwerth (castle village) and its wooded hills. Returning Arnhem City; an despairing alien (older male teacher) transmitting verbal communication to a group of female earthlings tuned to cell phones and minimal textile language.

Skating Weather

It was sunny weather yesterday, so great for skating to Castle Doornenburg.
Totals: 28 km, 12,2 kph, 106 Hz, 3120 Kcal in 138 min, TTC 3 lectures libertarianism and conservatism.

Cooked Tjiem Tjiem Kai for a guest;
6 chicken parts (thighs or wing shoulders)
200 gram dried Tjiem Tjiem (Lily flower stamen)
100 gram dried Shiitake mushrooms (todo prasoro = frog umbrella) and dried Wood Ear Fungi (muizenoren = mice ears)
1 piece of ginger root, shredded
3 cloves garlic, 3 bay leafs, 3 spoons sugar
1 spoon Chinese Five Spice Powder
1 teaspoon Ve-Tsin (Monosodium Glutamate = MSG)
Chinese soy sauce

Remove wooded parts of the Tjiem Tjiem and soak with the mushrooms overnight.
Marinade the chicken parts in the mixture of soy sauce, shredded ginger, shredded garlic, spice powder, bay leaves and sugar.
Bake the leaked chicken parts in oil.
Add the marinade, the Tjiem Tjiem and the mushrooms and let it simmer till done.
Serve with white rice and cucumber (preserved in 50-up % vinegar + lemon juice, 2 shredded red peppers and 1 shredded garlic clove).

Sauconies at maximum mileage?

My Saucony runners are 9 months old with around 450 km. Yesterday they helped me break my record; 5.18 km at 8.6 kph at 126 bpm. The foreboding rain might have helped a bit. The Sauconies are softer and more cushioned than the 3 months old Asics I wear in turn.

Another finished; TTC - Einstein's Relativity and the Quantum Revolution.
Quantum theory is still a bit incomprehensible but the 'Copenhagen, cat in the box' should be tried. It will be fatal for many cats but science should rule and my garden alone could do without their visits.

Calculus & attitude

Yesterday I had to do some calculations about the strength of a steel construction. Internet provides a wide array of knowledge but my old schoolbooks would be much easier, more fun and faster. Very soon after delving the attic I found the books and a flash animated pyrolysis oven I want to integrate later. 'Leerboek der Mechanica', a cloth bound hardback printed in 1975 struck me with simplicity, straightforwardness, was to the point and wonderful courteous. This attitude must be the essence of the 'good old days'; respect and well formulated words. 32 years ago I took this for granted, today it's rare; information is being fired around without any consideration, the spam-age. Some text became outdated though; the use of slide rules & precision because of electronic calculators.

My Sunday started with a jog of 5.2 km at 8.3 km/h while listening to TTC - Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. While you were sleeping, I gained a fraction of a nanosecond in youth and used about 600 kCal. A relative view, because your space-time-gravity-altitude-mass was not taken in account. More good news; the way we look at things might influence these very things. For instance light; it’s both a wave and a photon (particle) depending of what we want it to be. The speed of light however will remain the same, regardless of the space-time where it’s measured from. Thus enabling 'travel' in time.
